Interim Management
Interim management is an ideal way of engaging a highly qualified and skilled individual for a specific project or business problem. The use of interim managers in business is increasing along with the recognition that great interim managers can add significant value to a business for a defined period of time. They deal with the challenges set them in a uniquely effective way and are able to view a company’s landscape from a different perspective.
Not to be confused with temporary workers or consultants, interim managers have created a defined space for themselves in UK industry.
Some tangible reasons to hire an interim manager:
- To keep permanent headcount down during periods of cost reduction or business uncertainty;
- To drive a specific project, the outcome of which is handed over to the normal business operation;
- To accelerate change (often where there is a very broad scope of work to be done, perhaps even starting with defining the vision and scope, and with significant stakeholder management required both across and outside the company);
- To manage corporate projects such as a merger or acquisition, re-organisation, start-up, spin-out or turnaround;
- To cover an urgent or short-term increase in workload;
- To bridge a personnel gap while a permanent employee is found, or to cover unexpected absence;
- To replace a management consultancy that has previously been employed to advise on a specific project, normally costing significantly more than an interim manager.
Some of the more intangible reasons to hire an interim manager:
- An interim manager is focused on providing the best solution for their client – career interims know that their performance is critical to their long-term career and to be recommended for other roles;
- An interim manager’s sole interest is in delivering the required business benefits;
- An interim will take delivery responsibility and stimulate activity;
- An interim contributes from day one, and provides a comprehensive handover on exit;
- An interim operates in a can-do and ego-less manner, sensitive to the political landscape but not constrained by it.
