“I was asked by the Board and major shareholders of Orthos Ltd to become Chairman in 2006. The Company was not performing in line with expectations and it quickly became clear to me that in order to address shareholder needs the Company needed to be properly capitalised (through the introduction of Venture Capital) and to appoint a new CEO .Obviously, the two needs were mutually dependent, the achievement of the former dependent on the latter and vice versa. The situation was therefore somewhat problematic but not unique.

Within a reasonable time frame two offers of VC funding were obtained both being conditional upon the appointment of a CEO. The challenge then became identifying such a candidate who would:

  1. Have the right skill set to meet both the needs of the business and it’s potential institutional investors.
  2. To be able to manage a team resistant to the external imposition of a new CEO
  3. Steer the Company through the protracted funding negotiations
  4. Be both able and prepared to take on such an assignment with the clear understanding that a successful funding conclusion was a prerequisite of both the Company’s future and the incumbent’s position as CEO.

I had had previous contact with Sarah Mattinson of Red Moon and she agreed to take on the assignment as described. We jointly defined the probable personnel specification and whilst Sarah had a good knowledge of the relevant general market (medical devices), we were together able to draw up a list of companies who might be targeted for potential candidates. Sarah moved forward with admirable diligence and within a short period had identified a long list of about 12 possible candidates. This we were able to reduce to 8 which Sarah then interviewed with the objective of presenting me with a shortlist of 4. I held final interviews in London (together with a senior industry professional in the role of advisor) and we were delighted with the quality of all 4 candidates. One in particular stood out (albeit he was previously known to me) and through Sarah an offer was made and accepted. Throughout the process working with Sarah was efficient, productive and enjoyable.

The successful candidate was appointed, funding achieved and Sarah (eventually) received her fee. The Company is now performing in line with shareholder aspirations and the total project can only be deemed a success.”

Sarah Mattinson demonstrated in my opinion a number of skills crucial to a successful recruitment agency:

  • Rapport with the customer – she understood the people and the environment into which the successful candidate was to be placed as well as the role and understood that the job description could never adequately capture the essence of the vacancy.
  • Networking and listening skills, not only did Sarah have the network of contacts to enable identification of suitable candidates but through pertinent questioning and listening she was able to unearth the key drivers and performance criteria that would ensure alignment with the requirements of the post and company.
  • Finally support: throughout the interview process Sarah was genuinely supportive both in terms of supplying insight into the company but on a personal level, a genuine feeling that getting the right fit was important for both parties and that this wasn’t a simple transaction.

Having had a number of interactions with agencies it has become far too evident that many are process driven and have a blinkered approach to recruitment, ticking boxes rather than understanding that whilst a candidate may not completely full fill the requirements, they may bring additional skills to the table.
